We inventors get upset when seeing great, new gadgets discovered by others. The simple inventions (nothing hi-tech) frustrate me the most. Even single piece products can solve a problem, improve something or somehow enhance our everyday lives. Everyone loves ideas that are cheap, clever and offer an obvious advantage. Some of us secretly boil with frustration and a crippled ego from not discovering the idea first. We could have earned the fame and the glory. Now, we missed again. There’s a new orange juice cap!
To many, the simple plastic orange juice cap seems just an uneventful item. It started as a common screw-on cap atop a cardboard carton – hardly different than any other. The early caps were white, opaque or clear – nothing memorable.
A marketing genius must have suggested changing the cap color to orange. Now it seemed better matched with the colored carton and the liquid within. But the shape remained short and round, with a flat top - like any other cap.
Finally someone had the WOW idea. They molded the cap to look exactly like an orange. It’s spherical like an orange. It’s colored like an orange. And the surface is dimpled like the skin of an orange. Every morning millions will marvel how it looks like an orange, feels like an orange and identifies the orange juice carton. They’ll agree it’s a great idea - cheap, clever and an obvious advantage. Damn, why didn’t I think of that?
